Rollinson Simple Engine

Although a single cylinder engine it is ‘double acting’ that is both strokes of the piston are powered by steam. Built in Basford, Nottingham in 1893, it was used by Hopewells in Basford to power machines making products for the textile industry.

Built by William Rollinson at the Basford Iron Foundry and Engineering Works, Old Basford in 1893. It was used until the 1960s at the nearby works of G Hopewell and Sons, whose business included machinery for bleaching and textile finishing. In the museum yard is a large iron cauldron from Hopewell’s.

If you know about Rollinson’s or Hopewell’s, the Museum would be interested to hear from you.
