Visitor experience

The Visitor Experience team makes sure that every visitor to the museum enjoys their visit as well as learning more about our industrial heritage. The team brings the museum to life by answering questions, giving guided tours, and sometimes even dressing up (don’t worry, that’s optional). Our TripAdvisor reviews are always talking about the amazing visitor services we provide, so if you’re eager to chat to our visitors, why not give this a try?

Learning and outreach

The museum is a fantastic resource for educators and the local community. The Learning and Outreach team develops education sessions for schools, as well as lectures and tours for adult groups, which are very popular. We are currently expanding our educational offer, especially for primary schools, and are looking for volunteers to run midweek sessions. If you’re interested, let us know!

Engineering

The Engineering team maintains, cleans, and operates the working artefacts, primarily in the Steam Hall and Workshop. They love to talk with visitors about the machines and to answer any questions.

The Technical team also manages technical projects, whether that means restoring an artefact or researching the history behind our exhibits for the visitors. Anybody with an engineering background interested in restoring, maintaining, or operating our collection of working exhibits is welcome to join this team.

What is the recruitment process?

Step 1 – Apply

Please enquire contacting us.

Step 2 – Informal interview

We will get in touch with you to arrange a time for an informal interview at the museum. We will get back to you within two weeks of receipt of your application.

Step 3 – References

For all volunteering roles, you will be asked to provide details of two referees who can provide a written reference.

Step 4 – Arrange Start Date

Once the Board of Directors has accepted your application, the Volunteer Coordinator will arrange a start date convenient to you and the team you will be working with.

Step 5 – Induction and trial period

You will receive a warm welcome from our volunteers and induction into your role (including a Health and Safety briefing). After your first four weeks of volunteering, the Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to make sure you are happy in your role.

Frequently Asked Questions – Volunteering

Does the Museum pay expenses? We are sorry, but we don’t currently pay transport, subsistence, or childcare costs.

Do volunteers have to commit to a certain number of hours/days? No. We appreciate any amount of time you can give us as a volunteer, and while in-house volunteers must sign up to a rota, there is no need to commit to a fixed amount of time.
